Bing Bang Theory
My favorite part because of my sister…
Serendipity is your basic chick flick. Man meets woman, woman lets fate decided whether to pursue something, and they both try and take fate into their own hands. There’s nothing too special about this movie, but it’s shallowly good. I might like the movie simply because the leading woman is Kate Beckinsale, and you can’t really go wrong with her. John Cusack fills the role of male lead pretty well, which is expected because this isn’t the first time he shows up in a romantic flick. The movie suffers from it’s over reliance of the fate theme. Eugene Levy also plays a role as a humorous sales attendant and he adds a decent humor element in the movie that helps it along. Again, there’s nothing too special about Serendipity. It’s a basic chick flick that is entertaining but not groundbreaking. Watch it if you like chick flick, pass on it if you don’t, but whether you watch it or not….go to the Serendipity café in Manhattan, it’s very good.
What can I say about The Guild? It’s just a great little internet show type thing. I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s one of those acquired taste type things as it’s mainly aimed towards the geek audience. Luckily, I fall under that category. It centers around the gaming subculture, more specifically the MMORPG population. I don’t really fall in that category cause I never really played a legitimate MMORPG, but I did play Duels for a significant amount of time and I was an active part of a guild. I regret to say I was an officer in the Fight Club Guild in Duels. Enough about me, I’m getting off subject. So yea, basically The Guild follows a guild as they try and balance their online gaming with their seemingly interconnected real life lives. Those that don’t know geekism and geek culture might get a lost or put off by this, but those that do get it will just love it. It definitely doesn’t hurt that Felicia Day aka Codex is quite a good looking redhead; hell I find her awkward geekiness kind of hot. Every member of the guild has their unique personas. Codex is the most regular person but still suffers from her agoraphobia. Then there’s Zaboo who is the hardcore geek that’s utterly obsessed with Codex. Clara, the bad mother who would rather play the game than raise her kids. Bladezz, who is basically the immature teenage boy that trolls everyone else. Tinkerballa who is the asian gamer who is all up on her tech. Finally, there is Vork, who is the guildmaster. basically he is the middle aged man whose life revolves around the game. The back and forth banter, witty dialogue, awkward moments, and innate humanity is what gives the show its appeal. Put simply, The Guild is a geek’s dream show. Kinda makes me want to play duels again….kinda….
The guild season 3 is the best of the series in my opinion. It made me laugh more than the other season. The dialogue is more witty and quirky as the past season and its more of a geekfest than ever before. Basically this season revolves around a new expansion pack for their MMORPG, and they run into a rival guild, The Axis of Anarchy. The Axis is perfectly annoying and out there. Codex is as quirky and awkward as ever. Geekdom is here. All they want to do is play the expansion and with several guild member out of commission, they have to find away to resolve the issue. Codex awkwardly leads the guild in this hilarious third season. Watch it if you’re a geek or if you want a taste of geekdom. Warning though, geekisms are plenty and gook jokes run rampant. That’s just the way I like it.
I was expecting to utterly hate this movie cause Russel Brand is annoying to me. Surprisingly I liked it a lot. It’s really raunchy and it’s pretty damn nonstop. It gets better as the movie progresses and it is full of drug and alcohol humor. I was totally surprised that Brand didn’t get annoying to me at all during the movie and I credit that to the script and directing. It just seems to work. Turns out this is one of the few movies that got me to laugh out loud. I still think that She’s Out of My League is the best comedy of 2010, but this one is tied for second with Hot Tub Time Machine.
My sister got me into the show Bones. The first season isn’t as polished as the other ones that I start out watching, but it’s a good introduction into the show. Deschanel plays Brennan pretty damn well. She seems to be separated from the rest of the world, like she’s couped up into her work to avoid the realities that bother her, mainly the disappearance of her parents when she was 15. Boreanaz plays Booth and he’s pretty much the opposite from Brennan. He is the normal, everyday guy…more or less. He focuses on his work to appease his conscience. He used to be a Ranger sniper and he wants to catch as many criminals as individuals he killed in combat. Both main characters have their own reasons to focus on their work, but what makes the show so great is the banter that goes on between the two of them. Their differing personality traits just create a great oil and water type thing. As different as they are they need each other and are driven by each other. I wish there was more of an overall story arch instead of the evolution of Brennan’s character to tie the whole season together, but the episodic nature also works well for this type of show where an entire case or mystery is solved within a single episode.
Is this the women’s version of The Hangover? In some cases yes, in some cases no. Lets start out with the yes portion of the day’s conversational piece. It’s raunchy. It has it’s gross out humor of which I won’t spoil. It even has some scenes that gave me deja vu. An Allen type character is even present. You can tell that The Hangover had an effect in this movie and was, at least in part, a sort of inspiration. This is a woman’s R rated comedy through and through. I can say that I enjoyed it as a comedy because it definitely was funny. Now to the difference from The hangover. Obviously it’s women. But more importantly there’s an emotional side that wasn’t there in The Hangover, at least not to this degree. Whereas The Hangover was nonstop laughs and jokes and was a collection of hilarious bits, Bridesmaid has an emotional side that I felt catered more towards the female audience in a good way because it differentiates itself from slapstick and bit comedies like Hangover. Sorry for all the comparisons to the Hangover but I think it’s the best way to describe the movie because it is, basically, a different take on The Hangover. Kristin Wiig does a great job and really carries the movie. She is the reason I liked this movie. I think without her it would have just been a disappointment. Apatow and Wiig is giving Todd Philips and Zach Galifianakis a run for their money. Let’s see how Hangover 2 holds up against this new contender.
